The narration by Robert Whitfield.is superb - he inhabits the world and the people, bringing out the social differences between officers and men with great skill and subtlety. I was totally transported and gripped, and the last days of the polar team ( from Scott's diaries) are so moving.

The personal details are so telling - Apsley Cherry-Garrard should never have gone (he was shortsighted, young and unskilled) and often he could not wear his glasses because of the cold but still plugged on without a complaint. Apsley Cherry-Garrard's account is beautifully written (apparently with some help from his neighbour George Bernard Shaw) and though in the early stages you think he goes into too much detail, it all builds up to a tapestry of triumph and disaster. What those men went through was so extraordinary that it almost beggars belief.

This outstanding account was written some ten years later by the youngest participant, clearly still guiltridden for not finding the party returning from the Pole. Read it and be awestruck by what the men of Captain Scott's last expedition did in the days before modern technology and communications. Numerous formatting issues in the Kindle edition, such as headings included in the text, references to photos or drawings that were not included, quotations from literature not clearly delineated, etc.A truly great book.Too much detail for my taste, to a degree that it detracted from the story.The description of the “worst journey in the world” which turned out to be the miraculous survival of three men who traveled over dangerous terrain at night in search of Emperor Penguin eggs.Provides an in-depth analysis of what happened to Scott and his team, leading to their demise about 11 miles from the depot which likely would have saved them.Immerses the reader into what it was like to be an Antarctic explorer during the early 1900s.Recommended to those who enjoy detailed first hand accounts of explorations. He paints a picture of Scott, not as concerned with the “race to the pole” as with the enhancement of human knowledge.

Apsley Cherry-Garrard has combined his observations with the journals of several members of the party into a narrative of both the scientific and exploratory objectives. Originally published in 1921, this book is an account of Scott’s Second Antarctic Expedition written by one of the participants.
